Arson Suspected in Steyning Flat Fire That Led to Eight People Being Rescued
Sussex Police have launched an arson investigation following a fire at a block of flats in Steyning that led to the rescue of eight people. Emergency services were called to St Cuthman’s Road early this morning to tackle the blaze.
The fire, reported at around 12.29am, prompted a large-scale response involving firefighters, police, and paramedics. Fire crews used ladders to rescue residents from the affected building, where significant damage was caused to the ground and first floors. The fire was brought under control after approximately four hours, with no injuries reported.
Sussex Police confirmed the incident is being treated as “deliberate ignition” and are appealing for information. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service deployed four fire engines to the scene, while ambulance crews assessed and treated eight residents, who were later taken to hospital for further checks. Witnesses or anyone with footage are urged to contact police or Crimestoppers anonymously.
