Conservatives Win Worthing Council Seat in Marine Ward By-Election
The Conservative Party has claimed victory in the Marine ward by-election for Worthing Borough Council, with 20-year-old Thomas Taylor winning the seat.
The by-election was held after former Labour leader Beccy Cooper resigned from the council following her election as MP for Worthing West in the July general election.
Taylor secured 865 votes, narrowly defeating Labour’s Mary Mernagh, who garnered 781 votes. The turnout for the by-election was approximately 32 per cent. The full results saw candidates from the Reform UK, Green, and Liberal Democrat parties trail behind. This victory brings the Conservative presence on the council to ten seats, with Labour holding 22, along with two Greens and three Worthing Community Independents.
Another by-election in Heene ward is scheduled for October 10 after the resignation of Labour’s Richard Mullholland.
