Documentary Premiere Highlights Worthing FC Owner George Dowell’s Remarkable Journey
A new documentary titled The Club That George Built premiered last night at Worthing’s Dome Cinema, showcasing the inspiring story of George Dowell, the owner of Worthing Football Club.
Dowell, once a promising footballer, had his life turned upside down after a car accident left him paralysed from the chest down at the age of 17. Despite struggling with the trauma and its impact on his mental health, he made a remarkable comeback by purchasing Worthing FC in 2015 using compensation money from the accident. His intervention saved the club from financial ruin, making him the youngest football club owner in the UK.
Now, nearly a decade later, Worthing FC is playing at its highest level since its founding in 1886. Dowell’s contributions to football and the disabled community have been recognised with an MBE.
The documentary, set to air on TNT Sports and Discovery Plus, explores both Dowell’s journey and how football played a key role in his recovery.
