Emergency Roadworks Cause Traffic Gridlock in Worthing Town Centre

Emergency roadworks in Worthing town centre are causing significant traffic congestion after an engineering issue forced a key one-way road to be temporarily converted into a two-way street. The disruption is expected to last until March 5.

Engineering difficulties related to the Worthing Heat Network led to an emergency road closure at the junction of Chatsworth Road and High Street. The eastbound one-way road has been altered to allow two-way traffic, with three-way temporary traffic lights now in place at the junction with Chapel Road. These new lights, positioned close to the existing Richmond Road traffic lights, have caused long tailbacks, affecting the circular one-way system in the area.

According to information provided by infrastructure company Hemiko, the emergency measures were required due to buried apparatus discovered at the High Street junction. Worthing Borough Council stated that the Worthing Heat Network installation involves significant underground infrastructure work, which will result in temporary traffic lights, diversions, and road closures affecting multiple routes, including Lyndhurst Road, Union Place, and Park Road. Efforts are being made to minimise disruption, with work scheduled for weekends and extended hours where possible.
