Fire at Littlehampton Waste Site Continues as Residents Advised to Stay Indoors
A fire at a waste facility in Littlehampton has entered its fifth day, prompting local authorities to issue safety advice to residents in the affected area.
The fire, which broke out at the Arun Waste Services facility located in Bairds Business Park, Grevatts Lane, continues to be managed under controlled conditions by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
Approximately 50,000 homeowners in the region between Bognor and Littlehampton have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed to avoid exposure to smoke. The fire service, in consultation with the Environment Agency, has decided to allow the fire to burn under control, applying limited water to specific hotspots to minimise the risk of water run-off pollution to the surrounding environment.
Residents have been urged to stay indoors and avoid areas affected by smoke or ash. Additional health advice includes keeping vehicle windows and vents closed when driving through smoke and carrying inhalers for those with asthma.
The fire, which involved over ten fire engines at its peak, has caused significant concern due to its impact on local air quality and the environment. An investigation into the cause of the blaze will commence once the situation is deemed safe.
