Fundraiser Launched for East Preston Widow Who Lost £60,000 in Online Scam

A fundraiser has been launched to support a 79-year-old widow from East Preston who lost £60,000 to an online scam, leaving her home unfinished and severely damaged.

Ms Morley, who lives on Sea Lane, was targeted by scammers posing as legitimate financiers offering assistance to complete roof repairs. The fraud has left her with significant debts, a leaking roof, and no funds to continue renovations.

Sussex Police confirmed they are investigating the incident and are working alongside Action Fraud to support the victim. Ms Morley, who has no immediate family, explained that her upstairs rooms remain heavily damaged due to the incomplete works. She expressed concern for the wellbeing of her small dog and cat, fearing she could not afford future veterinary bills should they arise.

Builder Alex Aird, who had been carrying out structural repairs at Ms Morley’s property, helped initiate the crowdfunding campaign, setting a £50,000 target to cover the outstanding and future work required. Mr Aird described Ms Morley as a person who has dedicated her life to helping others, including her role supporting owners of epileptic dogs through her charity work.
