Further Damage Found on Worthing Pier, Delaying Reopening Plans
Worthing Pier’s reopening has been delayed as additional structural damage was discovered, requiring more extensive temporary support.
The pier, closed since October 10 due to storm damage, was set for partial reopening in November with temporary repairs. However, recent inspections revealed further compromised piles, prompting a more substantial approach to stabilisation.
Structural engineers initially planned to install a temporary support system during the upcoming spring tide in mid-November, aiming to allow limited public access. The additional damage, hidden until now, requires reinforced support to handle the pier’s weight safely. Worthing Borough Council confirmed that the revised temporary solution will proceed as planned in November’s tidal window, with a detailed engineering plan expected soon.
The pier’s closure has disrupted local businesses and events. Popular restaurants Perch on the Pier and Tern had to close their Worthing locations abruptly, with Tern relocating to Littlehampton to mitigate financial losses. The annual Worthing Lions fireworks display, originally set for November 5, has also been canceled. The council continues to engage with affected businesses and explore support measures during this period.
