Hospital Apologises After Missed Diagnosis Leads to Mastectomy for Worthing Mum

A Worthing mother has received a six-figure settlement and an apology after her breast cancer diagnosis was delayed, leading to a double mastectomy.

Serena Russo, a 54-year-old mother of four, discovered a lump in her breast in June 2019 and was initially told her mammogram results were normal. However, when she returned to her GP eight months later due to ongoing concerns, a stage two tumour was found in her right breast. A subsequent biopsy revealed no spread, but consultants advised removing her left breast as a precaution.

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust admitted the delay and settled the case out of court. Chief Medical Officer Professor Katie Urch apologised to Mrs Russo and her family, stating the trust is committed to improving services through investments in staff and technology to ensure faster diagnoses. Mrs Russo hopes sharing her story will encourage others to seek prompt medical advice and ask questions to advocate for their own care.

Mrs Russo, originally from Italy, reflected on her ordeal, describing it as life-changing but expressing gratitude for the care received after her diagnosis.
