Lancing Students Complete West Sussex Fire IGNITE Course

Nine young people from Northbrook College have successfully completed the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service’s IGNITE course, culminating in a special ceremony at Lancing Fire Station.
The programme, aimed at 16- to 18-year-olds, involved simulated firefighter exercises designed to build resilience, improve well-being, strengthen teamwork, and promote community spirit. A pass-out parade on Friday, 13 December, recognised the students’ achievements, with proud families in attendance. Certificates were presented by Andy Piller, area manager for service delivery at West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.
Speaking at the event, Mr Piller praised the students, stating, “Throughout the course they have worked hard, overcome challenges, and worked together as a team, which is fantastic to see. They should all be very proud of what they have achieved.” Councillor Duncan Crow also commended the initiative, highlighting its positive impact in building confidence and life skills among young people as they prepare for adulthood.
The IGNITE course is part of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service’s targeted education efforts to support youth development across the county. This programme aims to empower participants with essential life skills while fostering stronger community connections.
