Morrisons to Close Shop in Goring as Part of Cost-Cutting Drive

Morrisons has announced the closure of its convenience store in Goring-by-Sea as part of a wider cost-saving initiative across the UK.
The closures are part of the supermarket chain’s ongoing ‘renewal programme’ aimed at optimising operations and addressing rising costs. In total, Morrisons plans to close 52 cafés, 18 market kitchens, 17 convenience stores, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters, and four pharmacies. The Goring-by-Sea store, located in Strand Parade, and the cafe at Hawthorn Road, Wick, Littlehampton, are among those affected.
The company said a “wide-ranging review” had revealed operational areas where costs were disproportionate to customer usage and value. While around 365 jobs are at risk, Morrisons expects the majority of affected staff to be redeployed to other roles within the business. Chief executive Rami Baitiéh said the changes are necessary to focus investment in areas that better align with customer needs and business growth.
Morrisons confirmed it would work with third-party providers in some locations to offer specialist services where in-house facilities are being closed. The supermarket emphasised its continued commitment to its Market Street concept and acknowledged the disruption the closures may cause to staff, adding it would support colleagues throughout the transition.
