Nearly 100 Violent Incidents Reported Against West Sussex Council Staff
Nearly 100 incidents of violence against West Sussex County Council staff were recorded between April and October 2024, with libraries and highways teams bearing the brunt of the abuse.
Figures reveal that 45 cases of physical and verbal abuse were recorded between April and June, with the highest numbers occurring in libraries and care homes. This was followed by a further 54 cases between July and September, bringing the total to 99 incidents in just six months. Reports include violence at undefined locations such as roads and day care settings.
A council spokesperson emphasised that policies are in place to safeguard staff and provide support when incidents occur. In previous statements, Joy Dennis, the cabinet member for highways and transport, condemned the behaviour of individuals who threaten staff, particularly those repairing roads. She vowed that the council would take firm action against perpetrators.
This follows ongoing challenges faced by council workers, including delays in projects due to abuse against contractors. The council continues to stress the importance of a safe working environment and is working to address the issue through strengthened policies and public awareness campaigns.
