NHS Sussex Issues Warning Over Rise in Whooping Cough Cases
NHS Sussex has issued a warning about the rising cases of whooping cough across the county.
The health authority is urging people at risk, including babies, young children, and pregnant women, to get vaccinated against the bacterial infection otherwise known as pertussis.
Vaccinations can be arranged through local GPs or maternity services. Initial symptoms resemble those of a cold but can escalate to severe coughing fits, often accompanied by a distinctive “whoop” sound and breathing difficulties. Children under six months are especially vulnerable, facing risks such as dehydration, pneumonia, and seizures.
Although older children and adults typically experience milder symptoms, complications can still occur, including sore ribs, hernias, and ear infections. Severe cases may require hospital treatment, but most individuals can be treated with antibiotics.
