Pavement Licence Fee Delay Offers Relief to Worthing Businesses
Worthing businesses have been granted a delay on pavement licence fees until September 2025 following council discussions.
The proposed fee for businesses with tables and chairs on the pavement was initially scheduled for implementation in September 2024. However, Worthing Borough Council postponed the plan after a consultation revealed strong opposition from traders. Concerns were raised that the fee could harm local businesses already struggling during the colder months.
Councillor Hilary Schan proposed delaying the fee, citing emotional pleas from business owners and the challenges of winter trading. She emphasised the need to avoid further stress for businesses ahead of the crucial summer season. The council voted in favour of the delay, with seven councillors supporting the motion, four opposing, and one abstaining.
The revised fee schedule sets a £500 cap for first-time applications and £350 for renewals.
