Plans for New Signal Crossing at West Worthing Station Revealed

West Sussex County Council has unveiled plans to improve safety on Tarring Road in Worthing, including a new signal-controlled pedestrian crossing near West Worthing Railway Station.

The proposal aims to address safety concerns on a section of the road with a history of pedestrian collisions, including a fatality in 2009. Plans include reducing the width of the road from 13.8 metres by building out the footway, making it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross. Additional upgrades include contra-flow cycling southbound on Valencia Road, improvements to kerbing, surfacing, and drainage, and relocating street furniture.

No parking spaces will be removed, and the council has launched a consultation on the project, running until December 21. The scheme, estimated to cost £250,000, is funded by Active Travel England and is expected to be completed within six to eight weeks during the first half of 2025.
