Plans to Convert Worthing College into Police Station Scrapped

Plans to convert Northbrook College’s Broadwater campus in Worthing into a new police station have been scrapped by Sussex Police.

The proposal, which aimed to relocate police operations from Centenary House in Durrington, was withdrawn from consideration by Worthing Borough Council on the same day it was due to be reviewed.

A spokesperson for the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner’s office confirmed that, after conducting due diligence on the site, the force decided not to proceed with the acquisition. The police now plan to explore alternative options to meet their estates transformation objectives. The move was initially intended to establish a ‘district hub’ at the college site, accommodating officers and staff who need to vacate Centenary House by December due to its redevelopment into housing.

Plans to buy the Broadwater campus emerged after its owners, Chichester College Group, listed it for sale as part of a consolidation of their Worthing sites. However, the proposal faced opposition from residents concerned about noise and disruption. Sussex Police had revised their plans in November to exclude neighbourhood policing services from the site, but objections remained. The force has indicated that more of its estate could be sold in the future as part of its ongoing property strategy.
