Police Appeal After Littlehampton Residents Targeted in Banking Scam

Police in Littlehampton are investigating two cases of fraud involving elderly victims targeted by impersonators posing as senior police officers.

In both incidents, victims in their 80s received phone calls from individuals claiming to be a Detective Sergeant or Superintendent. The fraudsters alleged the victims’ bank accounts were involved in counterfeit banknote operations and requested large cash withdrawals for “verification.” The impersonators arranged for couriers to collect the money, stating it was needed for further investigation.

The scammers appeared to have detailed personal information about their targets, including names, ages, addresses, and banking details. Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for information to assist their inquiries.

Residents who believe they may have been targeted are urged to report the matter online or call 101, quoting reference 463 of 06/01. Authorities stress the importance of verifying the identity of any unsolicited callers claiming to represent law enforcement or other organisations.
