Adur and Worthing Council have issued a stark warning to the public about the dangers of ’tombstoning,’ a high-risk activity that involves jumping from heights into water.
The council emphasised that the waters surrounding Worthing Pier and the River Adur are too shallow for such activities, even during high tide. Jumping into these waters could result in severe injuries or even death due to the potential of hitting rocks or suffering cold water shock.
A council spokesperson stressed the importance of safety, advising the public to enter the water from designated areas such as the beach or riverbank instead. The warning comes as temperatures rise, and more people seek to cool off along the Sussex coastline.
