Residents Warned After Suspected Palm Oil Found on Worthing Beach

Residents in Worthing have been advised to stay alert after reports of a white, waxy substance, believed to be palm oil, washing up on the beach. The council has warned that while quantities appear small, ingestion could be harmful to dogs and wildlife.
Worthing Borough Council’s coastal office team has received reports from residents about the suspected palm oil deposits stretching from near Splashpoint Leisure Centre to Worthing Pier. The council has stated that although there is currently no significant accumulation, the substance could pose a risk if consumed by animals. Residents walking their dogs along the beach have been urged to watch out for the material and take precautions.
Palm oil itself is not highly toxic to dogs, but it has a laxative effect and can cause sickness, diarrhoea, and dehydration. Ingesting large lumps may lead to more severe conditions such as pancreatitis or intestinal blockages. Experts recommend that pet owners seek veterinary advice immediately if they suspect their dog has eaten any of the substance. The council has asked residents to report any sightings by emailing photos and location details to the Worthing Coastal Office. Cleanup efforts are ongoing, with authorities coordinating with the Coastguard and Environment Agency to monitor the situation.
