Sainsbury's plans new Tarring store on former car showroom site

Sainsbury’s could soon open a new convenience store in Tarring, if plans to redevelop a former car showroom are approved by the local council.

A planning application has been submitted by Alder King Planning Consultants on behalf of Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd. The proposal outlines the demolition of the Clarion Cars showroom, currently located to the east of South Street, and the construction of a Sainsbury’s Local convenience store with associated parking facilities.

The planned 407m² store would offer a range of groceries including fresh produce, bakery goods, dairy, alcohol, and some household items. A customer car park with cycle parking is also part of the proposal. According to the planning documents, the store is designed to serve the immediate residential area, providing a convenient option for top-up shopping and reducing the need for longer trips.

The application states that the development is in a sustainable location and will offer both economic and social benefits. The proposal claims it will not create any issues with traffic, drainage, or residential amenity, and is intended to enhance the street scene. The full planning application is available on Worthing Borough Council’s website under reference AWDM/0407/25.
