Scope Charity Shop Closes in Worthing as Lease Ends
Scope has closed its charity shop in Worthing as the lease on the premises neared its end, separate from the national consultation on the future of the charity’s retail operations.
The shop, located in Connaught Buildings, Chapel Road, ceased trading on Saturday, February 7, with signs thanking the community for its support over the years.
The national disability equality charity, Scope, confirmed that the Worthing shop closure was not part of its broader consultation process, which is considering closing 77 out of 138 shops across the UK due to financial pressures. The Worthing branch provided valuable work experience for disabled people and volunteers, offering opportunities in customer service, merchandising, and vocational qualifications. Scope’s Chief Executive, Mark Hodgkinson, expressed sadness over the closure, acknowledging the strong community support and the contributions of staff and volunteers.
Scope has forecasted potential retail losses of £1.5 million this financial year, prompting a phased closure plan for underperforming stores. While the Worthing shop’s closure was unrelated to these plans, the charity cited rising operational costs and changes in retail habits, such as the shift to online shopping, as significant challenges. Scope has assured that affected staff and volunteers are being supported, with some transitioning to roles in other local shops.
