Severe Weather Emergency Protocol Extended in Adur, Worthing, and Arun

A severe weather emergency protocol (SWEP) has been extended in Adur, Worthing, and the Arun district to protect rough sleepers during freezing conditions.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) activated an amber cold weather alert on January 2, initially expected to end on January 8, but has now extended it until January 12 due to continued cold temperatures. SWEP ensures rough sleepers without alternatives can access emergency accommodation during this period.

Adur and Worthing councils confirmed SWEP will remain in place until Monday, January 13, with outreach teams advising rough sleepers and providing assistance into temporary housing. Arun District Council has extended the protocol until 7 am the same day, citing extremely low night temperatures and harsh wind chill factors.

Residents concerned about rough sleepers are encouraged to use the Streetlink website or app to report individuals who may need help. Outreach services will receive the reports and work to inform individuals about available support options.
