Shoreham Airport Proposes Runway Expansion and Modernisation

Shoreham Airport has submitted plans to resurface and widen its deteriorating runway, citing urgent safety and financial concerns.

The proposals also include new facilities and energy-efficient upgrades to secure the airport’s future.

Brighton City Airport Ltd (BCAL), which operates Shoreham Airport, has requested permission from Adur & Worthing Councils to repair the “spalling and degrading” runway. The airport reports that loose debris on the runway is routinely cleared by staff but acknowledges this is not a sustainable long-term solution. The planned works aim to widen the runway from 18 to 23 metres, aligning with UK Civil Aviation Authority safety standards, particularly for operations in strong crosswinds.

In addition to the runway improvements, BCAL’s application outlines plans for a new air traffic control facility, modern hangarage, and upgraded LED lighting for the runway and taxiways. The airport emphasised that these investments are crucial to reversing its financial struggles, which have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, the insolvency of a major flying school, and reduced aircraft movements. Despite these challenges, BCAL highlighted ongoing demand from aviators and aircraft owners, contingent on upgraded infrastructure and facilities.

The proposed upgrades will not increase the number of flights or the size of aircraft permitted to land but are intended to ensure safety, reduce energy costs, and support the region’s net-zero goals. BCAL warned that without significant investment, the airport’s operations could become unviable, leading to potential closure.
