Shoreham Airshow Disaster Pilot Seeks Licence Reinstatement

The pilot involved in the 2015 Shoreham Airshow disaster, Andrew Hill, is seeking the reinstatement of his flying licences at a hearing before the Civil Aviation Authority. The hearing is being held at the International Dispute Resolution Centre today, 2nd October, and will continue until tomorrow morning.

Andrew Hill’s flying licence was revoked following the tragic crash of his Hawker Hunter jet at the Shoreham Airshow, which claimed the lives of eleven people. The disaster occurred on August 22, 2015, when the plane crashed onto the A27 during an aerobatic manoeuvre. Hill is attempting to regain his airline transport pilot licence, private pilot plane licence, and flight radiotelephony operator’s licence.

Families of the victims have expressed their outrage at Hill’s bid to return to flying. Many, including relatives of the deceased, have spoken out against the decision, citing their ongoing grief and the findings of an inquest that concluded the victims were unlawfully killed.

Hill was acquitted of manslaughter charges in 2019, but the coroner deemed his flying at the time of the crash to be “exceptionally bad.”
