Shoreham Residents Fearful After Series of Deadly Dog Attacks

Residents in Shoreham are expressing concerns for their safety after a series of dog attacks have resulted in the deaths of a cat and a dog, leaving the community fearful.

The most recent attack occurred on 22 February in the Hammy Lane area, where a dog was reportedly mauled by another dog that had escaped from Middle Road Recreation Ground. Sussex Police confirmed they received a report of the incident but classified it as a civil matter.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the attacks as “horrific” and said the community is living in fear. “The neighbourhood is very scared. There are lots of small children and disabled people with service dogs who are frightened to go out,” they said. They also recalled a previous attack in July, when their cat was killed by a dog, followed by another fatal attack on a dog in Wilmot Road weeks later.

The resident criticised the lack of police action, stating that despite multiple reports, no further steps had been taken. “Laws need to be changed because the police only intervene when a dog attacks a person. We are living in fear that it could be a child next,” they warned. A Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed they had received the latest report and had passed intelligence on to the relevant policing team.
