Shoreham Sewage Pipe Burst Sparks Parliamentary Debate
A burst sewage pipe in Shoreham has caused disruption and concern, with the issue being raised in the House of Commons by local MP Tom Rutland.
The incident, which occurred on September 9, involved a main sewer under pressure from wastewater pumps. Southern Water has been working on repairs, with a section of Ravens Road closed until September 23.
Southern Water confirmed the repairs were nearly complete and apologised for the disruption caused by tankers and equipment in the area. A spokesperson said backfilling was underway, with full reinstatement of the road scheduled for Monday. The burst has led to complaints from residents about the smell and inconvenience.
East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tom Rutland highlighted the incident in Parliament, criticising years of under-investment in water infrastructure. He called for government action on the issue, while the Leader of the House, Lucy Powell, mentioned the introduction of the Water (Special Measures) Bill aimed at addressing concerns over the state of the UK’s waterways.
