South Downs National Park Launches "Discover the Downs" Initiative

Hundreds of schoolchildren from across Sussex will have the opportunity to explore the South Downs National Park, thanks to the launch of a new initiative called “Discover the Downs”.
Funded by the government, the programme aims to provide fully-funded outdoor learning experiences for children, particularly those who have limited access to nature.
This latest initiative, led by outdoor learning specialist Gina Mitchell, will offer activities such as conservation education, bushcraft, and wild art to help foster a connection with the natural world. Schools are encouraged to apply for this limited-time funding as soon as possible.
Research shows that outdoor learning can significantly benefit children’s mental and physical health, enhancing social skills and reducing anxiety. Amanda Elmes, who leads the park’s learning and outreach programmes, emphasised the importance of children developing a connection with nature, stating that they are the future custodians of the park and its precious wildlife.
