South Downs Teacher Survives Severe Allergic Reaction at School

March 29, 2024

A maths teacher at Windlesham House prep school in Washington experienced a severe allergic reaction that almost claimed her life.

Billie-Jo Button became critically ill shortly after arriving at work, exhibiting symptoms of anaphylaxis, including lightheadedness, inability to focus, and swelling of the ears and nose.

The school’s medical team, led by nurse Kate Hooper, acted swiftly, administering three adrenaline pens and utilising an automated external defibrillator to stabilise her condition before hospital intervention.

Windlesham House’s headmaster, Ben Evans, is advocating for heightened allergy awareness, the significance having adrenaline pens on site and ensuring staff proficiency in their administration.

Reflecting on the experience, Billie-Jo has commended the school’s rapid response and stressed the importance of widespread allergy awareness. Thankfully she has now made a full recovery and is back teaching.
