Southern Water Seeks 91% Price Increase Amid Infrastructure Overhauls
Southern Water has requested the largest price increase of all water companies, seeking a 91% hike that could result in households paying £915 annually by 2030, according to the Consumer Council for Water (CCW).
This proposal comes just ahead of a significant meeting where industry regulator Ofwat will determine permissible charges for water companies from 2025 to 2030.
The proposed increase is attributed to essential upgrades to water infrastructure plagued by severe issues. Katy Taylor, Southern Water’s chief customer officer, acknowledged public concerns over rising payments but stressed the need for substantial investment to address the unique challenges of the water-stressed region.
The funds from higher bills are intended to reduce storm overflow usage, secure water supplies for a growing population, and protect the environment.
While the regulator is expected to reject the full extent of the requested hikes, significant bill increases are anticipated. Mike Keil, chief executive of the CCW, warned that the proposed rises would likely shock consumers, emphasising the importance of water companies clearly communicating the benefits of the investments to justify the higher costs.
