Speed limit reduced on A280 Long Furlong to improve safety after fatal crashes

The speed limit on a section of the A280 Long Furlong, north of Worthing, is being permanently reduced to 40mph in response to safety concerns following multiple accidents, including a recent fatal collision.
West Sussex County Council has confirmed the speed limit change will take effect on Monday, 21 April 2025. The reduced speed will apply from 30 metres west of the A24 Findon Roundabout to 250 metres south of the junction with Tolmare Farm Road. New signage has already been installed along this stretch of the road.
The decision follows a request from local residents, who highlighted the dangers posed by changes in elevation and sharp bends along the eastern section of Long Furlong. The area, which includes the vicinity of Findon Cricket Club, has seen several serious incidents in recent years, including a fatal collision involving a car and a lorry in September 2024 and a two-vehicle crash in March 2025 that led to road closures.
The council stated that the new 40mph limit reflects the road’s layout and is intended to reduce accident risks. The move forms part of a wider effort to improve safety on known accident blackspots across the county.
