Sussex Police Commissioner Katy Bourne Announces Mayoral Candidacy

The Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, has announced her intention to run for the new role of Sussex Mayor, following the government’s recent approval of devolution plans.

The proposed changes will see the responsibilities of the Police and Crime Commissioner absorbed into the mayoral position, prompting Bourne to seek nomination in upcoming elections.

Bourne stated that the government’s devolution announcement includes the postponement of this year’s local elections, with potential mayoral elections scheduled for 2026. She emphasised her commitment to preserving the unique identity of the Sussex police force and ensuring that the public’s voice in policing remains strong across the region, including rural areas. Her office is in ongoing discussions with the Home Office and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to navigate the transition.

The devolution plans could see Worthing and Adur’s boundaries expanded to include neighbouring authorities such as Brighton & Hove, and Chichester. This restructuring may lead to the replacement of borough and district councils with larger unitary councils.
