Sussex Police Launch Winter Crackdown on Drink and Drug Drivers
Sussex Police have launched their annual winter crackdown on drink and drug-driving, stepping up patrols and drug testing to reduce road accidents. The campaign runs from December 1 to January 1, targeting those who risk lives by driving under the influence.
Operation Limit, part of a nationwide initiative, will see Sussex Police increase roadside checks and deploy additional resources to tackle the issue. Last year’s campaign led to 261 arrests, with 56% linked to drug-driving offences. Police are urging the public to discourage loved ones from driving under the influence and to report offenders to prevent fatalities.
Chief Constable Jo Shiner highlighted the devastating impact of drink and drug-driving, stating, “Our campaign aims to save lives by deterring offenders and dealing robustly with them.” The campaign also aims to raise awareness, reminding motorists that substances like alcohol and drugs can impair driving abilities long after consumption.
Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne emphasised the severe consequences of driving under the influence, including license bans, fines, and imprisonment. The initiative, supported by the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, reinforces the message that driving while intoxicated is unacceptable and avoidable through alternative transport options.
