West Sussex Council Receives Over 30,000 Pothole Reports in a Year

West Sussex County Council has revealed it received more than 30,000 pothole reports in the last financial year, a significant portion of the 69,669 highway reports filed in that period. The council acknowledged the difficulties faced by motorists over the high number of defects and the impact on local travel.
Of the reports, 30,444 related specifically to potholes, with 17,000 received in just the first four months of 2023. The council completed more than 45,000 road repairs, 29,661 of which were for potholes. Despite the challenging conditions, worsened by extreme weather fluctuations, the council says it remains committed to improving road safety, working twilight shifts and Saturdays to manage the workload.
In addition to repairing potholes, West Sussex County Council carried out extensive road surface improvements, covering 225km of roads with treatments including resurfacing, surface dressing, and micro-asphalt applications.
The council manages 4,000km of roads across the county.
