West Sussex County Council Seeks Government Support to Tackle A27 Congestion
West Sussex County Council is urging the government to address ongoing congestion issues along the A27, following the cancellation of a proposed bypass in Arundel. The £320 million project was scrapped earlier this year as part of budget cuts.
At a council meeting held on October 18, Simon Oakley, councillor for Chichester East, expressed concerns about the government’s decision to cancel the project without consulting local authorities or offering compensation measures. Oakley highlighted the growing congestion from Chichester to Shoreham, emphasising its impact on local productivity and economic growth.
Council leader Paul Marshall echoed these concerns, describing congestion on the A27 as a significant obstacle to the county’s economic progress. He plans to write to the Prime Minister and seek a meeting with relevant stakeholders to push for long-term improvements to the road network, addressing both congestion and safety concerns.
