West Sussex Expands Solar Energy Project to 60 More Sites

West Sussex County Council is expanding its solar energy programme, bringing renewable energy systems to 60 more schools and public buildings across the county.
The initiative, which includes Solar Photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Storage installations, aims to reduce carbon emissions, lower energy costs, and increase sustainability.
Currently, solar panels generate clean electricity at 74 schools and nine council buildings, in addition to two large-scale solar farms in Tangmere and Westhampnett. The expansion will see new installations at libraries, fire stations, and additional schools. Surplus energy will either be stored in batteries for later use or fed into the national grid, depending on each site’s requirements.
The project is part of the council’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2030.
Councillor Deborah Urquhart, cabinet member for environment and climate change, highlighted the programme’s role in reducing reliance on fossil fuels while also offering educational opportunities on renewable energy.
