Work to Begin on Cycling and Pedestrian Improvements in Shoreham

Work to improve cycling and pedestrian routes in Shoreham-by-Sea is set to begin next month, with a focus on enhancing connectivity and safety at key crossing points.

West Sussex County Council has announced that construction on the Upper Shoreham Active Travel Scheme will commence on March 3, 2025. The project follows a public consultation in June 2024 and aims to improve routes in Upper Shoreham Road, Buckingham Road, and Middle Road.

The work will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will establish a shared cycleway link between The Drive and Buckingham Park Primary School. This includes a new parallel crossing on Upper Shoreham Road, upgraded pedestrian crossings, raised tables on The Drive and Buckingham Road, a segregated cycle lane between Buckingham Road and Upper Shoreham Road, and cycle “by-passes” in buildouts on Middle Road.

The second phase, scheduled for the 2025 school summer holidays, will focus on further pedestrian crossing enhancements and a shared pedestrian and cyclist footway near Buckingham Primary School. The junction at Windlesham Road will also be realigned, and resurfacing will take place. The council has assured residents that efforts will be made to minimise disruption, with full details on road closures and traffic management to be communicated in advance.
