Worthing Beaches Gain Enhanced Environmental Protection Status
Two beaches in Worthing have recently been designated as bathing waters, according to announcements from Worthing Borough Council and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
This designation will result in additional environmental protections and regular monitoring for pollution, benefiting Goring Beach, Beach House Grounds in Worthing, and nearby Rottingdean beach in Brighton.
Starting from today, the Environment Agency will oversee the monitoring activities, which include testing for harmful bacteria such as E. coli. This decision comes as part of efforts to ensure safer and cleaner waters for public use. The monitoring is crucial as it helps hold those responsible for pollution accountable and safeguards the water quality for beachgoers.
Alan Lovell, chairman of the Environment Agency, highlighted the significant improvements in bathing water quality over the past decade, attributing the progress to rigorous regulation and collaborations with local groups and partners.
He emphasized the necessity of continued investment from various sectors, including water companies and local communities, to maintain and enhance water standards.
