Worthing Borough Council Backs Fossil Fuel Ban Initiative
Worthing Borough Council has announced its support for a global treaty to end the use of fossil fuels, reaffirming its commitment to tackling climate change and promoting clean energy alternatives.
The council backed the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, a campaign aimed at encouraging governments worldwide to phase out coal, oil, and gas in favour of renewable energy. The motion was introduced by councillor Ian Davey and seconded by councillor Claire Hunt during a full council meeting. Council leader Sophie Cox plans to invite Ed Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, to visit Worthing and witness the town’s efforts in combating climate change.
Among these initiatives is the development of the Worthing Heat Network, set to deliver low-carbon heating to town centre buildings from 2025. The council is also working to improve energy efficiency in its properties, reduce gas use, and install solar panels to generate clean energy. Councillor Cox highlighted the importance of these projects in addressing climate change impacts and creating a sustainable future for Worthing.
