Worthing Borough Council Issues Warning Over Sinking Sand on Beach
Worthing Borough Council has issued a warning for beachgoers to exercise caution following reports of soft, sinking sand on Worthing beach.
Coastal wardens and members of the public have observed patches of sand that sink by five to seven centimetres when stepped on.
The council explained that these occurrences are typically found in areas where shingle meets the sand at low tide. The sinking effect is due to the sand settling until it reaches the chalk bedrock.
According to the council spokesperson, this soft sand usually appears during periods of calm weather and is expected to disperse when rougher weather conditions return. In the meantime, Worthing Borough Council is advising people to remain vigilant while walking along the shore or swimming.
