Worthing Businesses Struggle as Roadworks and Parking Changes Impact Trade

Worthing town centre businesses are facing significant financial strain, with some reporting an 80% drop in trade due to prolonged roadworks and changes to parking systems. The Worthing Business Improvement District (BID) has raised concerns about the disruption, urging action from developers and the council.

Hannah Manzaroli, manager of Worthing BID, said the ongoing installation of the Worthing Heat Network has caused persistent issues, with delays and alterations being made without prior consultation. She also pointed to new parking rules requiring payment on arrival, which she believes discourages longer visits to the town centre. Poor Wi-Fi connectivity in the area has further complicated the use of mobile payment apps, adding to the frustration of both businesses and visitors.

Hemiko, the company responsible for developing the heat network, acknowledged the challenges but insisted that any project extensions were necessary for safety reasons and to avoid conflicts with local events. The company has introduced free parking and bus travel days to support businesses and pledged to improve communication efforts. Meanwhile, Worthing Borough Council confirmed ongoing discussions with the BID to address concerns and mitigate the impact on local traders.
