Worthing Council Faces Financial Struggles Amid Housing Demands
Worthing Borough Council is confronting significant financial challenges, with housing demands consuming nearly a quarter of its annual budget. The council is working to address a budget gap before February while exploring long-term strategies for financial stability.
Writing in the Worthing Herald, Cllr Sophie Cox highlighted that Worthing Borough Council’s finances, are under severe pressure due to rising housing costs. Approximately 24% of the council’s £40 million annual expenditure goes toward emergency, temporary, and supported accommodation, creating an unsustainable financial model.
To combat this, the council adopted a new financial strategy in July, focusing on income generation and external funding instead of traditional borrowing methods. Additionally, council representatives are engaging with national government bodies to seek exceptional support and reduce bureaucratic hurdles that hinder private sector collaboration.
While the financial challenges remain daunting, Cllr Cox expressed optimism about finding creative and sustainable solutions to restore stability.
