Worthing Council Plans to Relocate Beacon for VE Day Celebrations

Worthing Borough Council has announced plans to relocate the town’s beacon to a more accessible location in preparation for the 80th anniversary of VE Day and other future events.

The council has submitted a planning application to move the beacon from its current site between the lido and the pier to a new permanent position near West Buildings shelter.

According to a statement from the council, the new location has been selected to better accommodate large crowds during commemorative events. It will also ensure that other attractions, such as the observation wheel, can be more easily accommodated in the space between the pier and the lido. The council emphasised that the move would enhance accessibility and safety for attendees at public gatherings.

The beacon is scheduled to be lit on Thursday, May 8, as part of the 80th anniversary celebrations marking the end of World War II in Europe.
