Worthing Council Requests Government Support Amid Budget Shortfall

Worthing Borough Council is seeking exceptional financial support from the government to address a projected £2.53 million budget shortfall for the 2025/26 financial year. Cabinet members approved sending a formal request to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

The council plans to use a mix of borrowing and capital receipts to manage its finances while implementing a “resilient and sustainable” financial strategy. Officials also highlighted the need to address gaps in government funding, particularly concerning homelessness support. The council faces further challenges, with annual budget deficits expected to rise to £6.793 million by 2029/30.

Opposition leaders have criticised the council’s financial management, warning of potential bankruptcy if government support is not granted. Meanwhile, Worthing’s council leader Sophie Cox defended the move, citing over a decade of funding cuts and a commitment to maintaining essential services. A report revealed Worthing receives significantly less homelessness funding per household than other West Sussex councils due to outdated government data.
