Worthing Council Urges Stagecoach to Rethink Bus Service Changes

Worthing Borough Council has raised concerns over Stagecoach’s proposed changes to local bus services, warning they could negatively affect vulnerable residents.

The council leader, Sophie Cox, has written to the bus company urging reconsideration of the changes, which are set to take effect in spring 2025. The proposals aim to improve service reliability and increase evening and weekend buses, but local residents and the council have voiced worries about reduced frequency and altered routes.

Two key services facing adjustments include the Durrington to Worthing Hospital route and the direct bus from Goring to Brighton. While Stagecoach claims the changes will reduce delays by avoiding level crossings and introducing new services, Councillor Cox highlighted the potential impact on elderly and disabled residents who depend on public transport for hospital appointments. Additionally, concerns were raised over the frequency reduction of the popular 700 route, set to be replaced by the 11 route, which will run less frequently.

The council has requested Stagecoach extend the consultation period beyond the February 7 deadline to allow more public feedback. They have also urged the company to better engage with residents and improve publicity around the proposals to ensure Worthing’s sustainable transport options remain accessible. Residents can view the proposed changes and submit feedback through Stagecoach’s online consultation platform.
