Worthing Couple Launches Social Group for Deaf Children

A Worthing couple has established a new social group, Deaf Kids Connect, to support deaf children and their families. Inspired by their experiences raising a deaf child, Charlotte and Nick Short aim to create a welcoming community for deaf children aged up to 12 and their hearing siblings. The inaugural meet-up is scheduled for March 29 at West Tarring Young People’s Hub.

Charlotte and Nick Short founded Deaf Kids Connect after navigating the challenges and joys of raising their son Milo, who was born with mild hearing loss that has progressed to severe. The couple recognised the need for representation and inclusion for deaf and hard-of-hearing children, as well as a supportive environment for their hearing siblings. The group will provide a space for children to play, communicate, and connect with others who share similar experiences.

The first gathering of Deaf Kids Connect will take place on Saturday, March 29, from 2pm to 4pm at West Tarring Young People’s Hub in Tarring. The group welcomes families from across Sussex and caters to all levels of hearing loss, including hard of hearing, glue ear, temporary or permanent conditions, tinnitus, or difficulty accessing sound. The activities will include games, crafts, and sports, as well as resources and support networks for parents and caregivers.

The Shorts have also launched a website, www.deafkidsconnect.co.uk, and social media pages to spread awareness. They are currently funding the initiative themselves but plan to establish a donation page soon. Charlotte emphasised the importance of deaf children connecting with peers who understand their experiences, stating that building these relationships helps children embrace their deafness and develop a strong sense of identity.
