Worthing High Street Partially Closed for Heat Network Construction
Worthing High Street is currently undergoing partial road closures as construction continues on a pioneering heat network project aimed at delivering sustainable heating across the borough.
The road is closed to southbound traffic between the Union Place roundabout and the entrance to the High Street multi-storey car park. Diversion routes have been established for vehicles heading towards A259 Brighton Road. The work is part of the Worthing Heat Network project, a collaboration between Worthing Borough Council and Hemiko, a low-carbon energy company responsible for the network’s design, construction, and operation.
The construction, which resumed after a Christmas break, involves laying underground pipes for the heat network. Hemiko has stated that while these works are disruptive, they will provide long-term environmental benefits. Local residents were notified in December, and detailed diversion diagrams were made available. Southbound traffic is being redirected via Sompting Avenue, Dominion Road, and Ham Road, with clear signage in place.
Additionally, pedestrian pathways near the High Street multi-storey car park have been affected. The footpath and grass verges outside the car park are closed until early spring, while the opposite side remains accessible. Temporary bus diversions are also in effect, with some stops suspended. Construction is expected to continue until March 23.
