Worthing Hotel's Future as Homeless Accommodation in Limbo After Appeal Postponed
An appeal hearing regarding the future use of Windsor House Hotel in Worthing as accommodation for single homeless people was indefinitely postponed, casting uncertainty over the project.
Originally set for March 26, the hearing was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, leaving participants and observers awaiting a new date.
The controversy centres on a rejected planning application by the SDR Group, aiming to convert the hotel into shared living spaces for 44 single homeless individuals.
This initiative faced opposition from Worthing Borough Council’s planning committee in January 2023, sparking an appeal to the planning inspectorate.
The plan proposes a £7.8 million contract between SDR and Adur and Worthing councils, intended to save the councils approximately £2.5 million in bed and breakfast costs over a decade.
Local residents have expressed concerns about the suitability of Windsor House Hotel for such a large-scale accommodation, leading to significant public debate. The council and SDR Group are awaiting a decision from a planning inspector, who will review written evidence and statements, as well as consider evidence presented on the day of the hearing, once rescheduled.r
