Worthing Launches First Phase of Carbon-Neutral Heat Network
Construction has begun on a heat network that marks a major step towards Worthing’s goal of becoming a net-zero town in the fight against climate change.
The project has been initiated by Worthing Borough Council and is managed by Hemiko, the company responsible for the construction and operation of the network.
The first phase of the heat network is expected to save 3,000 tonnes of carbon annually, equivalent to removing 2,000 cars from the road.
Buildings such as Worthing Town Hall, Worthing Hospital, Assembly Hall, Portland House, Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, and Connaught Theatre will be the initial connections to the network. Heat networks offer a low-carbon alternative to gas boilers by harnessing local unused heat for heating and hot water.
Project Manager Chris Horner mentioned that preliminary works, including digging trial holes, have been ongoing, and full construction within the grounds of Worthing Hospital will commence next week. Hemiko has scheduled an engagement event for public consultation on August 1 at Worthing Town Hall from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm.
