Worthing Museum and Art Gallery to Install Energy-Efficient Glazed Windows

Worthing Museum and Art Gallery has received approval from Adur and Worthing councils to install secondary glazing, aimed at improving the building’s thermal efficiency while maintaining its historic exterior.

The decision, made on 24 January 2025, allows the Edwardian Baroque Grade II listed building to enhance sustainability without altering its original timber windows.

The museum, located on Chapel Road within the conservation area, will fit internal glazing set back from the existing windows to ensure minimal visual impact. The original single-glazed timber frames will remain unchanged, preserving the external appearance of the building, which has been a cultural landmark since its opening in 1908. The project aligns with Historic England guidelines, which support secondary glazing as a low-impact solution for listed buildings.

Support for the proposal came from The Worthing Society, which highlighted the benefits of improved thermal and noise insulation for visitors and staff. The installation will not require scaffolding or road closures, minimising disruption to neighbouring properties. Similar measures were previously implemented at the nearby Grade II-listed Town Hall in 2021.
