Worthing Pier Closure Likely to Last Until Late November
Worthing Pier may remain closed until late November following significant storm damage that has impacted local businesses. Worthing Borough Council has revealed that repair efforts face delays due to tidal limitations.
The pier, temporarily closed since October 10, sustained damage for the first time in over 25 years. Worthing Borough Council stated that repair work can only be safely carried out during a spring low tide, which has caused difficulties in scheduling the necessary repairs. A replacement pile needed to support the pier is unavailable in time for the current tidal window, forcing the council to explore interim solutions to reduce strain on the structure.
Local businesses, including restaurants and arcades, have been severely affected, with some staff placed on unpaid leave. The council is working closely with engineers to ensure the pier can be reopened safely, but the next opportunity for full repairs will not be until mid-November. In the meantime, the council is considering temporary measures to allow limited access to the pier.
