Worthing Pier Closed temporarily Due to Storm Éowyn Safety Risks

Update: The council have reported that as a result of the drop in wind speed the pier has now reopened.

In an update at 10am on Friday, the council reported: “The winds have dropped in strength and we’ve now reopened the pier. Thanks everyone for your patience this morning.”

Worthing Pier has been temporarily closed as Storm Éowyn brings severe weather conditions to the south coast, with strong winds forecast for the area.

Worthing Borough Council announced the closure, citing safety concerns due to the Met Office’s warnings of severe winds from Storm Éowyn. The storm, which has prompted rare red warnings for Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland, is expected to cause disruption across the UK, including heavy rain and snow in some areas. Yellow weather warnings are in effect for Sussex, with reports of fallen trees and train speed restrictions on Friday morning.

“We’re going to keep Worthing Pier closed first thing [Friday] because of the Met Office warning of severe winds,” the council stated. The gates will remain shut until conditions improve, with safety checks conducted throughout the morning. The council anticipates reopening as early as mid-morning if wind speeds drop to safe levels.
